Originally created in the 1830s as an imitation of small spinners it soon became known as good general purpose fly.

Pattern Dressings
- Hook : 12-16.
- Thread : Darkish reddish brown tying silk.
- Tail : Three whisks of red hackle.
- Body : Darkish reddish brown tying silk.
- Wings : Woodcock's wing.
- Hackle : Natural red cock.
Hen pheasant wings are used as an alternative.
