When should I fish with the Jenny Spinner?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Jenny Spinner to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Jenny Spinner Trout Fly

The Jenny Spinner is a classic dry fly pattern, meticulously designed to imitate the delicate imago stage of the Iron Blue Dun (Neoleptophlebia mollis), commonly known as the Jenny Spinner. The Jenny Spinner is often know as the Iron Blue Male Spinner. It's striking appearance attracts the attention of even the wariest fish.

This fly is particularly effective during spinner falls, when adult mayflies return to the water surface to lay eggs, making it an essential addition to any angler's fly box.

It is particularly successful from April to October during that period of fading light that occurs during the evening, before darkness falls.

Expert Tip:

Presentation: The Jenny Spinner excels when presented as a dry fly during spinner falls. Its realistic appearance and delicate landing can entice even the most discerning trout.

Technique: Employ a dead-drift presentation on slow-moving sections of rivers and streams to mimic the natural drift of spent spinners. A fine tippet and careful casting are essential to prevent spooking wary fish.

Seasonality: Best used during late spring to early autumn, aligning with the lifecycle of the Iron Blue Dun mayflies.

Design: The Jenny Spinner features a body crafted from white horsehair or quill, accented with bright red tips at the tail and shoulder. It is adorned with white cock hackle fibers for the tail and wings, tied in a spent position to mimic the natural posture of the mayfly spinner. A white cock hackle is used for the hackle, enhancing its buoyancy and lifelike appearance.

Origin: The Jenny Spinner is a traditional English fly pattern, with its origins rooted in the rich history of British fly fishing. It was popularised by John Veniard, a renowned English fly tyer and author, who contributed significantly to modern fly tying techniques.
